North Queensland (Australia) and New Guinea

Trunk type:

Has a thin trunk (3-6 inches), crown is brown and fibrous.

Leaf type:

  Fan palm.

Suckering/Solitary:

Solitary (single trunk).

Maintenance:

Moderate, does well in Southern California.

Speed of growth:

Slow

Height:

15+ feet

Soil requirements:

Rich top soil that drains well.

Sun Requirements:

Filtered or near full sun along the coast in So Cal.  Shade stunts this species.  

General Description:

This is a great palm.  It has beautiful dark green fan leaves.  It is a great palm for those darker areas in the garden.  Definitely worth a try.

Other Notes:

If you like this palm see Licuala elegans, Pritchardia beccariana and Sabal mauritiiformis.
